How the time is calculated
Time = word count ÷ pace. A 750-word speech at an average pace of 150 words per minute takes 750 ÷ 150 = 5 minutes.
Words = time × pace. Given a 3-minute time slot at the same 150 wpm pace, you'd want about 3 × 150 = 450 words to fill it.
The pace you pick matters more than the word count itself — the same 750 words takes about 4 minutes 25 seconds at a fast 170 wpm pace, or 6 minutes 49 seconds at a slow, deliberate 110 wpm.
Typical word counts by speech length
| Speech length | Words (at 150 wpm) |
|---|---|
| 1 minute | 150 |
| 3 minutes | 450 |
| 5 minutes | 750 |
| 10 minutes | 1,500 |
| 20 minutes | 3,000 |
