How tipping and bill splitting are calculated

BillTipTotal$64.0018% = $11.52$75.52+=Person 1Person 2$37.76$37.76
A $64 bill with an 18% tip totals $75.52 — split evenly between 2 people, each pays $37.76.

Tipping is just a percentage calculation applied to your bill:

Tip amount = bill amount × (tip percent ÷ 100)

Total = bill amount + tip amount

Worked example: A $64.00 dinner bill with an 18% tip: 64.00 × 0.18 = $11.52 tip. Total = 64.00 + 11.52 = $75.52.

Splitting evenly: once you have the total, divide by the number of people. For the same $75.52 total split between 2 people: 75.52 ÷ 2 = $37.76 each, made up of $32.00 bill share plus $5.76 tip share.

Worked example (larger group): A $180.00 bill with a 20% tip totals 180.00 + 36.00 = $216.00, split 4 ways: 216.00 ÷ 4 = $54.00 per person.

This assumes everyone splits the total evenly regardless of what they individually ordered. If your group wants to split by exact item cost instead, our Percentage Calculator can find each person's individual tip on their own subtotal.

Tipping around the world

Tipping customs vary enormously by country, and using US norms abroad can either shortchange service staff or come across as confusing (or even insulting) depending on where you are.

United States and Canada: tipping is expected and forms a meaningful part of many service workers' income, with 15-20% standard at sit-down restaurants.

United Kingdom and much of Europe: a service charge (often 10-12.5%) may already be added to the bill — check before tipping again. If no service charge is listed, rounding up or adding 5-10% for good service is common but optional.

Japan and South Korea: tipping is not part of the culture and can be seen as awkward or even rude — excellent service is considered a baseline expectation, not something that requires an extra payment.

Australia and New Zealand: tipping is not obligatory since service staff earn a full minimum wage, though rounding up or a small tip for exceptional service is increasingly common in cities.

When in doubt in an unfamiliar country, a quick search for "tipping etiquette in [country]" before you travel avoids both under-tipping and unnecessary over-tipping.
