At 20 to 40 feet long with 16-inch stud spacing, building this wall in two or three manageable sections on the subfloor makes it much easier to raise safely without overtaxing your crew. Just remember to stagger your top plate joints by at least four feet across those section breaks to tie the entire run together rigidly.

How to use the wall framing calculator

  1. 1

Enter the wall length and height in feet — pick a standard 8', 9', or 10' height, or type a custom one.

  2. 2

Choose 16" or 24" on-center spacing, then enter your count of doors/windows and corners or T-intersections.

  3. 3

Pick 2×4 or 2×6 lumber, single or double top plate, and your plate stock length — or leave waste and extras on Auto.

  4. 4

Your stud count, suggested cut length, plate boards, and total board feet update instantly as you adjust any field.

How stud count is calculated

field studskingjackcornerField studs on spacing + extra studs at openings and corners
Field studs land on regular spacing; openings and corners each need their own extra studs on top of that base count.

Field studs come from the wall length alone: field studs ≈ ⌈(length in inches ÷ spacing)⌉ + 1. Openings and corners each add their own studs on top of that — openings for the king/jack/cripple studs that carry a header, corners for the extra studs needed to give both walls a nailing surface. A waste percentage (10% by default) is then applied to the whole subtotal and rounded up, since miscut or culled lumber isn't limited to just the extras.

Worked example: a 20 ft wall, 8 ft tall, framed at 16" on center with 2 doors/windows and 2 corners: field studs = ⌈240 ÷ 16⌉ + 1 = 16. Extras = (2 × 5) + (2 × 3) = 16. Subtotal = 32, and with 10% waste that rounds up to 36 total studs, each cut to the standard 92-5/8" precut length for an 8 ft wall.

Corners and T-intersections explained

Framing detailExtra studs (default)Why
Door or window opening5King + jack studs on both sides, plus header cripples
Exterior corner33-stud corner gives both walls a drywall nailing surface
Interior T-intersection3Same nailing-surface problem as a corner, treated identically

These are practical averages, not a substitute for a stamped structural plan — a header spanning a wide opening or an engineered load path may call for more studs than the default. Use Advanced overrides on the calculator to match your actual framing plan.

Plates and pre-cut stud lengths

Plates run the full length of the wall, not its height — a standard double top plate plus single bottom plate uses 3× the wall length in linear footage. Lumber yards sell precut studs for the three standard wall heights (92-5/8" for 8', 104-5/8" for 9', and 116-5/8" for 10') sized to leave the right gap for a double top plate and bottom plate. Any other wall height falls back to a calculated cut length from standard stock board sizes instead.

Once the wall is framed, our Drywall Calculator picks up from here — it uses the same wall length and height to estimate sheets, mud, tape, and screws for closing the wall in.
