How BTU sizing works
The base number comes from the standard Energy Star / DOE room air conditioner sizing table, which maps room area to a recommended BTU/hr — a 300 sq ft room starts at 7,000 BTU.
From there, three adjustments apply: sun exposure shifts the total ±10% (a heavily shaded room needs less, a very sunny one needs more), extra occupants beyond the first two add 600 BTU each, and a kitchen adds a flat 4,000 BTU for cooking-appliance heat.
Worked example: a 300 sq ft kitchen with moderate sun and 2 occupants. Base = 7,000 BTU. No sun adjustment, no extra-occupant adjustment, plus the kitchen's 4,000 BTU brings the total to 11,000 BTU/hr.

Notice the BTU-per-square-foot rate drops as rooms get bigger — this is why a flat multiplier would oversize a large room, and why the calculator above uses the full table instead.
