How the DIME method works
DIME adds together four categories most households need to plan for, then subtracts what you already have to find the gap:
- Debt: non-mortgage debt plus final expenses (funeral and related costs).
- Income: annual income × the number of years dependents would need it replaced.
- Mortgage: your remaining mortgage balance, so the home could be paid off outright.
- Education: an estimated cost per child for future education expenses.
Worked example: $70,000 annual income replaced for 10 years ($700,000), $15,000 non-mortgage debt, a $250,000 mortgage balance, $15,000 final expenses, and 2 children at $50,000 education cost each ($100,000) totals $1,080,000. Subtracting $30,000 in savings and $50,000 in existing coverage ($80,000 combined) leaves an estimated $1,000,000 additional coverage need — about 14.3× annual income.
What this calculator doesn't cover
- It doesn't recommend a specific insurance product — term, whole, or otherwise.
- It doesn't account for inflation eating into a fixed future education or income estimate.
- It doesn't model a stay-at-home parent's economic value, which some households choose to insure separately.
- It isn't personalized financial, tax, or estate-planning advice.
Once you have an estimated coverage target, our Net Worth Calculator helps put it in context against your full financial picture, and a licensed insurance agent can help translate it into an actual policy and premium.
