How currency conversion works
This calculator fetches a live table of exchange rates, each expressed as units of a currency per one US dollar. To convert between any two currencies, it first converts your amount into US dollars, then converts that dollar amount into your target currency. This two-step approach means the calculator only needs one rate table (everything relative to USD) rather than a separate rate for every possible currency pair.
The rates themselves are official European Central Bank reference rates, published once each business day. They represent the "mid-market" rate — roughly the midpoint between what banks buy and sell a currency for — rather than a rate any single bank or exchange service will actually give you. It's the standard benchmark used across finance for comparing how much a provider's rate is marked up.
Because ECB rates update daily rather than by the second, this calculator is built for planning and estimates, not for timing a trade or a transfer to the minute.
