Grade / Final Grade Calculator
Calculate your current course grade from weighted categories, solve for the score you need on a final exam, and send the result straight into the GPA Calculator.
How to use the grade calculator
- 1
Add each grading category from your syllabus with its weight and score — leave the score blank for anything not graded yet, like a final exam.
- 2
Your current grade updates instantly from whatever's already graded. To plan ahead, pick the remaining category and a target overall grade to see exactly what score you need.
- 3
Enter a course name and credit hours, then send it to the GPA Calculator — it's added as a course there automatically, ready to fold into your semester or cumulative GPA.
How weighted grades work
Most courses don't average every assignment equally — instead, assignments are grouped into categories (homework, quizzes, midterms, a final exam) and each category is worth a fixed percentage of the overall grade regardless of how many individual items are in it. A single 40%-weighted final exam can outweigh a dozen small 2%-weighted homework assignments combined.
This calculator treats any category with a blank score as "not yet graded" and excludes it from your current grade, renormalizing across whatever categories you do have scores for. That's different from treating a blank as a zero, which would understate your current standing.
The "what score do I need" tool solves the same equation in reverse: given every other category's score and weight, it works out exactly what you'd need on the one remaining category to land on a specific overall grade — the same backward-solving idea used by our GPA Calculator's target-GPA planner.
Sending a course to your GPA
A grade percentage isn't directly useful for GPA math — GPA runs on letter grades and credit hours. Once this calculator has a current or projected grade, it converts that percentage to a letter using a standard scale and lets you add it straight into the GPA Calculator as a real course, with the name and credit hours you specify — no need to work out the letter grade by hand or re-type anything.
