Actual vs. nominal board size

Lumber is sold under a nominal name — a "1x6" or "5/4x6" — that describes the rough-cut size before the board is planed smooth. The actual size after milling is smaller, and that's the number that matters for coverage math:

Using nominal size instead of actual width in a coverage calculation overstates how much each board covers, which is the single most common reason DIY material estimates come up short — this calculator's presets are already actual widths.

How deck boards and joists are calculated

  1. Rows of boards = deck width ÷ (board actual width + 1/8" gap) — how many board-widths it takes to span across the deck
  2. Linear feet needed = rows × deck length — the true total running footage of decking material required
  3. Boards to buy = (linear feet needed × waste factor) ÷ stock board length, rounded up to a whole board
  4. Joists = (deck length ÷ joist spacing) + 1 — joists run perpendicular to the boards, spaced along the length, and each individual joist spans the deck's width
  5. Joist boards to buy = (joists × deck width) ÷ joist stock length, rounded up

Worked example: A 16 ft × 12 ft deck using 5.5" actual-width boards needs 12 × 12 ÷ (5.5 + 0.125) ≈ 25.6 rows, for 25.6 × 16 ≈ 409.6 linear feet before waste. Adding 10% waste brings that to about 450.6 linear feet, and dividing by 12 ft stock boards gives 37.5 — round up to 38 boards. At 16" joist spacing, that same 16 ft length needs (16 × 12 ÷ 16) + 1 = 13 joists, each spanning the 12 ft width — 13 × 12 = 156 linear feet of joist material, or 13 joist boards at 12 ft stock length.

Estimating screws and footing concrete

Deck screws = boards needed × joists × 2 — the standard assumption of two face screws everywhere a board crosses a joist. Using a hidden fastener clip system instead changes this to a per-board clip count rather than a screw count, so treat this figure as a face-screw planning number.

Footing concrete = estimated posts × bags per footing. A typical 12-inch-wide, 2-foot-deep residential post footing takes roughly 2 bags of 50 lb quick-setting concrete, but frost depth requirements and footing diameter vary by location — check your local building code before finalizing a footing design.

Tips for ordering decking material

  • Always order extra. This calculator's waste factor already builds in a margin, but boards with warps, splits, or bad ends are common — an extra board or two beyond the calculated total avoids a mid-project supply run.
  • Order all your boards from the same batch when possible. Composite and wood decking can vary slightly in shade between production runs.
  • Stagger your seams. Avoid lining up every board's end joint on the same joist — plan which joist each seam lands on before you start cutting.
  • Let pressure-treated lumber acclimate to your site for a few days before installing, since it can shrink slightly as it dries.
  • Buy fasteners and concrete in bulk with the lumber — running short on screws, clips, or footing concrete mid-installation is one of the most common reasons for a delayed project.
