How ovulation and your fertile window are calculated
Ovulation date is estimated by working backward from your next expected period: next period date minus your luteal phase length. For a last period starting January 1, 2026, a 28-day cycle, and the standard 14-day luteal phase, the next period is expected January 29, so ovulation is estimated at January 29 − 14 = January 15, 2026.
Fertile window: the 5 days before ovulation through ovulation day itself — in this example, January 10-15, 2026, a 6-day span.

Cycle length vs. luteal phase — why it matters

Notice the pattern: the luteal phase (14 days) stays fixed, and the extra cycle length is entirely added to the follicular phase before ovulation. This is why a longer or shorter cycle shifts ovulation earlier or later, but the gap between ovulation and the next period generally doesn't change nearly as much.
How to get a more accurate picture
A calendar-based estimate like this one is a solid starting point, but it can't account for cycle-to-cycle variation caused by stress, illness, travel, or other factors. For a more precise, real-time picture, many people combine a calculated estimate with:
- Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs), which detect the LH hormone surge that occurs 24-36 hours before ovulation.
- Basal body temperature (BBT) tracking, which shows a small, sustained temperature rise after ovulation has already occurred.
- Cervical mucus changes, which typically become clearer and more slippery in the days leading up to ovulation.
