Words to Minutes Calculator Guide: Timing a Speech
How to estimate speech or reading time from word count and pace, with reference words-per-minute rates for speaking and reading.
Estimating how long a speech or reading will take comes down to one ratio: word count divided by pace, measured in words per minute.
The formula
Time = word count ÷ words per minute. A 750-word speech at an average 150 wpm pace takes 750 ÷ 150 = 5 minutes. Run the formula backward — time × pace — to find how many words fit a fixed time slot instead.
Reference paces
| Pace | Words per minute |
|---|---|
| Slow, deliberate speech | 110 |
| Average speech | 150 |
| Fast speech | 170 |
| Silent reading | 238 |
The silent reading figure comes from a large meta-analysis of reading-rate research (Brysbaert, 2019) — it's well above any speaking pace, since reading doesn't require forming and pronouncing each word out loud.
The Words to Minutes Calculator runs this in both directions instantly.
