Speaking Pace vs. Reading Pace: Why They Differ

Why silent reading speed is so much faster than speech, and what that means for timing a script meant to be read aloud.

Silent reading runs at roughly 238 words per minute on average, while speech — even fast speech — rarely exceeds 170-180 wpm. That's a meaningful gap, and it matters if you time a script the wrong way.

Why the gap exists

Reading silently only requires recognizing words, not forming and physically pronouncing them — the mouth, tongue, and breath all add time that pure visual recognition doesn't need. Speech is also naturally paced by breathing and articulation in a way silent reading isn't.

The practical mistake this causes

Timing a speech script by silently reading it through gives a falsely short estimate — a script that reads in 3 minutes silently can easily take 4-5 minutes spoken aloud at a natural pace. Always estimate spoken content at a speech pace (110-170 wpm), not a reading pace, and ideally time an actual read-through out loud.
