Framing a wall takes more than one number — it's a stud count that depends on spacing and openings, a separate plate footage, a cut length tied to wall height, and a total lumber order that adds it all up. This calculator runs every piece from one set of inputs.

What it calculates

  • Field studs: from wall length and 16"/24" on-center spacing.
  • Opening & corner extras: king/jack/cripple studs per door or window, plus 3-stud corners and T-intersections — both adjustable in Advanced overrides.
  • Total studs: field + extras, with a waste percentage applied across the full subtotal.
  • Plates: linear footage from wall length × plate layers (double top + bottom = 3×), converted to a board count at your chosen stock length.
  • Suggested stud length: the standard precut length for 8'/9'/10' walls, or a calculated cut length from stock lumber for any other height.
  • Board feet: a total lumber quantity for 2×4 or 2×6, useful for budgeting or comparing the two sizes.

Why field vs. total studs matters

Field studs alone chronically under-count a real order — openings and corners routinely add 20-40% more studs on top of the base run. Keeping the two numbers separate in the results (rather than only showing one combined total) makes it clear exactly where the extra lumber is going.
