Why 16" is still the default
Nearly every sheet good sold for walls — drywall, OSB, plywood sheathing — is engineered around a 16" grid, since 4 ft sheets divide evenly into three bays at that spacing. That universal compatibility, plus a bigger safety margin for load-bearing walls, is why 16" remains the default even where 24" is technically allowed.
When 24" makes sense
Non-load-bearing interior partitions in single-story construction are the most common place 24" on center shows up — it cuts field stud count by roughly 30% with no structural downside on a wall that isn't carrying anything above it. Always confirm with local code before framing a load-bearing or exterior wall at 24".
