How WoW Forever Talent Trees Work: Rows & Prerequisites
The two rules that control which talents you can pick in a WoW Forever classic-style talent tree — row point thresholds and named prerequisites.
WoW Forever's talent trees use the classic 7-row, 4-column layout, gated by two rules rather than the connection-line system modern WoW trees use.
Rule 1: Row thresholds
Each tree has 7 rows (0 through 6), and reaching row N requires at least 5×N points already spent somewhere earlier in that same tree — 5 points to reach row 1, 30 points to reach the row 6 capstone. It doesn't matter which talents those points went into, only the running total for that tree.
Rule 2: Named prerequisites
Some talents also require a specific talent above them to be fully maxed out — for example, Frost's capstone Ice Barrier requires a full point in Cold Snap, and Elemental's Lava Burst requires 3/3 in Lightning Overload. These prerequisites come straight from Wowhead's WoW Forever data, not a guess at typical layout.
Why both rules exist together
The row threshold keeps overall pacing even across a tree, while named prerequisites keep certain powerful talents tied to a specific earlier investment rather than just a raw point count.
The WoW Forever Talent Calculator enforces both rules automatically using the real data for each tree.
