Calculating a tip is a straightforward percentage problem, but splitting that tip fairly across a group trips people up more often than the tip itself. Here's the full formula, worked through from a single bill to a large group.

Step 1: calculate the tip

Tip amount = bill amount × (tip percent ÷ 100). For a $50 bill at 20%: 50 × 0.20 = $10 tip.

Step 2: calculate the total

Total = bill amount + tip amount. Continuing the example: 50 + 10 = $60 total.

Step 3: split evenly, if needed

Per-person share = total ÷ number of people. Splitting that $60 total 3 ways: 60 ÷ 3 = $20 per person.

Worked example: a larger group

Six coworkers split a $342.00 bill with an 18% tip. Tip = 342 × 0.18 = $61.56. Total = 342 + 61.56 = $403.56. Split 6 ways: 403.56 ÷ 6 = $67.26 per person.

When even splitting isn't fair
