It feels intuitive to round up — a bigger unit surely can't hurt. In practice, an oversized air conditioner causes a specific problem called short-cycling that a correctly sized one avoids.

What short-cycling is

An oversized unit cools the air to the thermostat's target temperature quickly, then shuts off. Because it ran for such a short burst, it never dehumidifies the room properly — air conditioners remove moisture gradually over a longer run, not in a quick blast. The room ends up cold but humid, which often feels less comfortable than a slightly warmer, drier room would.

The mechanical cost

Constantly starting and stopping puts more wear on the compressor than running steadily for longer stretches would, which can shorten the unit's working life and increase the odds of an early repair.

The better approach
