Square Feet vs. Square Yards vs. Square Meters

How square feet, square yards, and square meters relate to each other, the exact conversion factors, and which one each trade typically uses.

The three area units you'll run into most often for home projects aren't interchangeable by a simple factor of 10 or 100 — each comes from squaring a different linear unit, which is why the conversion factors look less round than you'd expect.

Why square yards specifically

Carpet is conventionally priced and sold by the square yard in the US, a holdover from carpet's typical 12 ft (4 yd) roll width — which is why a flooring quote in square feet and a carpet quote in square yards for the same room can look wildly different at first glance even though they describe the same space.

A common mistake

Because these are area units, a 10% error in a length measurement becomes roughly a 20% error in the calculated area once it's squared — which is why small measuring mistakes matter more for area-based estimates (flooring, paint, sod) than for simple length-based ones.
