Every run can be described three ways — how far, how long, and how fast — and any two of those numbers always determine the third. Understanding that relationship, plus how race predictions extrapolate from it, turns a simple pace calculator into a real training tool.
The core relationship
Pace = time ÷ distance. Time = pace × distance. Distance = time ÷ pace. A 28:00 5K (3.1 miles) works out to about 9:02 per mile — and that same pace predicts roughly how long a 10-miler, a half marathon, or any other distance would take if you held it steady.
Why race predictions aren't a straight-line multiplication
Doubling your 5K time doesn't give an accurate 10K prediction — holding a pace gets harder as distance increases, due to fatigue and fueling demands. That's why credible race predictors use Riegel's formula (T2 = T1 × (D2/D1)^1.06) instead of simple proportional scaling — the exponent above 1.0 builds in a realistic slowdown at longer distances.
