Roofing Squares vs. Square Feet: What's the Difference?

Why roofers measure in "squares" instead of square feet, how to convert between the two, and why the roof surface is always larger than the building's footprint.

If you've gotten a roofing quote priced in "squares" and wondered what that actually means compared to the square footage you're used to from other home projects, the conversion is simple โ€” but the number of squares in your roof isn't the same as your building's square footage.

The conversion

1 roofing square = 100 square feet of actual roof surface. To go from square feet to squares, divide by 100. A 2,000 sq ft roof surface is 20 squares.

Why "roof surface" isn't the same as "building footprint"

Square footage in most contexts (flooring, paint, a home listing) refers to flat, horizontal area. A roof isn't flat โ€” it's sloped, so its actual surface area is always larger than the flat footprint of the building underneath it. The steeper the pitch, the bigger that difference gets, which is why roofing estimates need your roof pitch, not just your building's dimensions.
