Polymeric Sand vs. Regular Sand for Paver Joints

Why polymeric sand is the standard choice for filling paver joints over regular jointing sand, how it works, and how much you'll need.

Regular sand and polymeric sand both fill the gaps between pavers, but only one of them stays there — the difference comes down to a polymer binder that activates with water.

How polymeric sand works

Polymeric sand is regular sand blended with polymer additives. Once swept into the joints and lightly misted with water, the polymers activate and harden, binding the sand grains together into a semi-rigid fill that resists being washed out by rain or hosed away, and makes it much harder for weeds and ants to get a foothold in the joints.

Why plain sand falls short

Regular jointing sand has no binder, so it gradually washes out with rain and gets displaced by foot traffic, leaving gaps that need to be re-filled every season or two. It's cheaper up front but a much higher-maintenance choice over the life of the patio.

How much you'll need

Coverage depends on joint width and paver size, but a common estimate is one 50 lb bag of polymeric sand per about 80 sq ft of patio. Wider joints or larger-format pavers with more open joint area will need more per square foot.
