Why the shape matters more than it seems
Pea gravel's round shape looks and feels nicer underfoot but never locks together — it stays loose no matter how much you compact it, which is exactly why it's wrong for a driveway base but right for a walking path or a decorative bed. Crushed stone's angular edges interlock under pressure, which is what gives a driveway base its load-bearing strength.
A common combination
Many driveways use both: crushed stone for the structural base and middle layers, with a top layer of pea gravel or fine gravel for a more comfortable, attractive driving surface.
