Flower beds are usually irregular shapes, which makes mulch coverage math feel harder than it is — the trick is breaking the bed into simple rectangles rather than trying to measure the whole curve at once.

Getting the depth right

2 to 3 inches is the standard mulch depth for flower beds — enough to suppress weeds and retain moisture without smothering shallow roots. Less than 2 inches doesn't block weeds effectively; more than 4 inches can hold too much moisture against stems and invite rot. Keep mulch pulled back a couple of inches from plant stems and tree trunks.

Measuring an irregular bed

Split the bed into 2-3 rough rectangles or a rectangle plus a circle (for a curved edge), measure each section's length and width separately, calculate the volume for each, and add the totals. This is far more accurate than trying to average an organic shape into one measurement.

Bagged vs. bulk mulch

A standard bag covers about 2 cubic feet. For small beds (under roughly 2 cubic yards), bagged mulch is usually more convenient; for larger areas, bulk delivery by the cubic yard is typically cheaper per unit and cuts down on plastic bag waste.
