How to Estimate Shingles for a Sloped Roof
How roof pitch increases the real surface area you need to cover, how roofing squares work, and how to add a waste factor for shingles.
Roofing material is estimated by the "square" — 100 square feet of actual roof surface — and the key mistake in a rough estimate is using the building's flat footprint instead of the true, angled roof surface area.
Why pitch increases the material you need
A sloped roof plane is always longer than its horizontal projection. The multiplier is the slope factor: √(rise² + run²) ÷ run. A 6/12 pitch has a slope factor of about 1.118, meaning the actual roof surface is about 11.8% larger than the flat footprint below it — and steeper roofs need proportionally more material still.
Worked example
A building with a 1,500 sq ft flat footprint and a 6/12 pitch has an actual roof surface of about 1,500 × 1.118 ≈ 1,677 sq ft — or roughly 16.8 squares. Add a 10-15% waste factor for cuts around vents, valleys, and edges, and you're ordering closer to 19-20 squares of shingles.
Steeper roofs need more, not less
It's a common misconception that a steeper roof has less surface area because it "takes up less ground space." The opposite is true — the steeper the pitch, the higher the slope factor, and the more actual material the roof surface requires for the same building footprint.
