How to Calculate Your Exact Age in Years, Months, and Days

The correct way to calculate exact age accounting for leap years and varying month lengths, and why simple year subtraction gets it wrong.

Subtracting birth year from the current year gives you an approximate age, but it's wrong for roughly a third of the year — anyone whose birthday hasn't happened yet this year is off by one.

The correct method

  1. Start with the year difference between the two dates.
  2. If the target date's month and day come before the birth month and day, subtract 1 from the year difference — the birthday hasn't occurred yet this year.
  3. Calculate the remaining months and days by working through the calendar from the birth date's month/day to the target date's month/day, accounting for how many days are in each month along the way.

Where leap years complicate things

February has 28 days in most years and 29 in leap years, which shifts the day-count math for anyone whose age span crosses a February. A calculator using a native date engine handles this automatically; manual calculation requires checking whether each intervening year is a leap year.

Common uses beyond curiosity

  • Confirming legal age for a contract, license, or eligibility requirement.
  • Calculating a pet's or document's exact age.
  • Finding a specific day-count milestone, like a 10,000th day alive.

The Age Calculator runs this exact logic instantly for any two dates, past or future.
