How Much Flooring and Paint Do I Need for a Room?
A combined formula for estimating both flooring and paint quantities for the same room, including how door and window openings factor into the wall calculation.
Flooring and paint are calculated from two different areas of the same room — floor area for flooring, wall area (minus openings) for paint — which is why estimating them separately so often leads to mismatched waste assumptions and duplicate measuring.
Flooring: floor area + pattern-based waste
- Floor area = length × width (sum multiple sections for L-shaped rooms).
- Add a waste percentage: 10% for a straight layout, 15% diagonal, 20% herringbone.
- Divide by coverage per box and round up.
Paint: wall area minus openings + waste
- Wall area = perimeter × ceiling height.
- Subtract door and window area (width × height × quantity, each).
- Add a small waste percentage (5% is typical) and multiply by the number of coats.
- Divide by 350 sq ft per gallon per coat and round up.
Worked example
A 12 ft × 14 ft room (168 sq ft) with 8 ft ceilings, one door (3 ft × 6.67 ft) and one window (3 ft × 4 ft): floor area is 168 sq ft; wall area is 2 × (12 + 14) × 8 = 416 sq ft, minus about 32 sq ft of openings = 384 sq ft net. Straight-laid LVP flooring needs about 10 boxes; 2 coats of paint on that wall area needs about 3 gallons.
