How Much Does a Marble Countertop Weigh?
The formula for marble countertop weight, a worked example at standard 3cm thickness, and why it matters for cabinets and moving day.
A standard 1.25-inch (3cm) marble countertop weighs about 17.7 lb per square foot. A typical 30 sq ft kitchen run comes to roughly 530 lb before any waste is added to the order.
The formula
Weight = area (sq ft) ร thickness (ft) ร 170 lb per cubic foot, where 170 is marble's typical density. Convert thickness from inches to feet first by dividing by 12.
Why this matters beyond curiosity
- Cabinet support: base cabinets need to be rated to carry the finished slab's weight โ a contractor can confirm whether yours need reinforcement before installation.
- Moving day: a single large slab section can weigh several hundred pounds, which is why fabricators typically install with a team and specialized equipment rather than by hand.
- Shipping and delivery: some suppliers price or schedule delivery differently above certain weight thresholds.
