Garage door springs aren't sized by guessing a part number — they're sized by counterbalancing the door's actual weight through a specific mechanism, either a wound shaft (torsion) or a stretched coil (extension). Torque is the number that actually matters
For torsion springs, required torque per spring = (door weight ÷ number of springs) × drum radius. A spring rated for too little torque leaves a door that won't stay open or strains an opener motor; one rated for too much torque can make a door slam open. Because torque depends on the drum radius as much as the door weight, two doors of the same weight can need noticeably different springs if their drum sizes differ.
Winding turns are a separate calculation
A widely used rule of thumb is about 7.5 turns per foot of door height, but the real number depends on the spring's wire diameter, inside diameter, and length working together — which is why professionals count and record the turns on an existing spring before removing it, rather than relying purely on a formula. Undersized turns leave a door heavy to lift; oversized turns can overshoot or strain hardware.
Why the wire size is shown as a range, not one number
