Fence Calculator Guide: Panels vs. Linear Feet
How to decide whether to calculate your fence project by prefab panels or by linear feet of continuous material, with examples of each.
Fencing is bought two fundamentally different ways, and using the wrong calculation mode is the most common reason a fence material estimate comes out wrong.
By panels
Use this mode for prefabricated sections sold at a fixed width — 6 ft or 8 ft wood privacy panels, vinyl fence sections, or any product that comes as a complete pre-built unit. The math is straightforward: total fence length minus gate openings, divided by panel width, rounded up.
By linear feet
Use this mode for continuous material — chain link fabric, wire mesh, or board-by-board picket fencing built on site — where there's no fixed panel width and posts are placed at a chosen spacing (8 ft on center is a common default) instead.
A quick way to decide
If you can point to a product listing that says "6 ft panel," use panels mode. If your material is sold by the linear foot or by the roll (like chain link fabric), use linear feet mode. Mixed projects — prefab panels for straight runs, custom framing for an odd angle — should be calculated separately per section and added together.
