CPC vs. CPM: Which Metric Actually Matters?

The difference between cost-per-click and cost-per-thousand-impressions pricing, and which one to focus on depending on your campaign's goal.

CPC and CPM measure the same campaign from two different angles — neither is universally "better," but one usually matters more depending on what the campaign is actually trying to do.

What each one optimizes for

MetricBest fitsWhat it ignores
CPCDirect-response campaigns aiming for clicks or sign-upsHow many people simply saw the ad without clicking
CPMBrand-awareness campaigns where visibility itself is the goalWhether anyone actually engaged with the ad

Why a low CPC isn't automatically a win

A very low CPC can come from a low CTR spread across huge impression volume rather than genuinely cheap, high-intent clicks — cheap clicks that don't convert can cost more overall than fewer, pricier clicks that do. Checking CPA and conversion rate alongside CPC catches this.

Some ad platforms bid on a CPM basis even when you care about clicks, and vice versa — it's worth knowing which one you're actually being charged for, since the other is derived from it rather than set directly.
