Body Fat Percentage vs. BMI: Which Should You Trust?
How body fat percentage and BMI differ, why they can disagree for the same person, and when each measurement is actually the more useful one.
BMI and body fat percentage both try to answer "is this a healthy body?" but they measure completely different things — BMI is a ratio of weight to height, while body fat percentage estimates what that weight is actually made of.
Where they disagree
A muscular athlete can post a BMI in the "overweight" range while sitting well within a healthy body fat percentage, because muscle is denser than fat and BMI has no way to tell them apart. Conversely, someone with a "normal" BMI but very little muscle mass — sometimes called "skinny fat" — can have a body fat percentage in the unhealthy range despite a normal BMI.

When each one is more useful
BMI is fast, free, and a reasonable population-level screen when you have no other data — it's still what most medical guidelines reference first. Body fat percentage is the better choice when you're training, tracking body recomposition, or you already know your BMI is misleading because of an above-average muscle mass or frame.
Best practice is to check both: your BMI for a quick population-level reference, and your body fat percentage for a measurement that actually reflects your body composition.
