Is 8 Glasses of Water a Day Actually Right for You?

Where the 8-glasses-a-day rule came from, why it doesn't fit everyone, and how to find a more individualized hydration target.

The "8x8" rule — eight 8-ounce glasses, about 1.9 liters — is one of the most widely repeated pieces of health advice, but it's a rough average, not a personalized recommendation, and it doesn't account for the factors that actually drive individual fluid needs.

Why a flat number falls short

  • A 250 lb person needs meaningfully more fluid at rest than a 120 lb person.
  • An hour of exercise adds real fluid loss that a flat daily number doesn't capture.
  • Climate changes sweat rate significantly, even without exercise.

A better starting point

A weight-based formula — roughly 35 ml per kilogram of body weight, adjusted upward for exercise and hot climates — gives a more individualized target than a flat rule while still being simple enough to calculate in seconds. It's still a general estimate, not a precise physiological measurement, but it beats treating every adult identically.
